College girl rescued four months after abduction

Police rescued a female university student on Friday night from a residence at Chartola Mor of Rangpur town four months after her abduction.

The law enforcers also arrested two people in this connection.

The rescued woman comes from Kulaghat village of Lalmonirhat sadar upazila of the district and is a student of Rangpur Carmichael University College.

She was admitted to Lalmonirhat sadar hospital on Saturday morning, while the two people arrested – Arif Rahman, 23, and his mother Shamima Nasrin, 47, both residents at fire service road in Lalmonirhat town – were sent to jail by a court.

Police said two other suspected abductors - Ashique Rahman, 25, from fire service road of Lalmonirhat town, and Rajib Miah, 30, from the capital Dhaka – are fugitives.

Sub-inspector Mahbub Islam led a team of Lalmonirat police in the rescue operation.

ASP Circle Mahfuzul Islam said the abductors along with the victim, changed their location several times in Dhaka, Bogra, Rangpur and other parts of the country.

"Police had tried several times to rescue the girl and finally – after four months – we were successful on Friday night," he said. The woman was abducted on her way home from university near Barobari in Lalmonrhat on January 23 this year.

The victim’s father lodged a case with Lalmonirhat police station where he accused four people – Ashique Rahman, Rajib Miah, Arif Rahman, and his mother Shamima Nasrin, and alleged that the gang who abducted his daughter was demanding a ransom of Tk500,000.
