A group of Dhaka University teacher yesterday commemorated the 42nd death anniversary of DU philosophy professor Gavindra Chandra Dev, popularly known as GC Dev.
Addressing the ceremony, teachers of the programme said a society with peace and harmony could be established, if Dev’s beliefs and philosophies were followed.
Dr Dev, who was born on January 1, 1907, was brutally murdered by the Pakistani army on the fateful night of March 25, 1971.
GC Dev completed his BA and MA in Philosophy from the Calcutta Sanskrit College and Calcutta University respectively. He got his PhD in philosophy from the latter in 1944.
Later in 1953, Dr Dev was appointed as an associate professor of the department of Philosophy and Psychology, Dhaka University.
GC Dev believed in idealism, and used to call his philosophy “synthetic idealism,” combining idealism, spiritualism and materialism.
The university’s philosophy department organised the programme at the Ramesh Chandra Majumder arts auditorium.
DU vice chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, speaking as the chief guest, said: “Despite being a prominent personality, Dev led an ordinary life, and contributed his life for the benefit of human being.”
Arts faculty dean Sadrul Amin, philosophy chairperson Latifa Begum and its professor Aminul Islam were present the programme, chaired by pro vice chancellor (academic) Nasrin Ahmad.
