At least 17 people were killed as Cyclone Mohasen ravaged the southwestern coastline damaging thousands of houses, standing crops and a large number of trees, reports BSS.
"The death toll from the storm rose to 17 as four more bodies were reported killed during the storm," Director General of Disaster Management Department Mohammad Abdul Wazed said on Friday.
Of them, seven people were killed in Barguna, four in Bhola, three in Patuakhali, two in Chittagong and one in Pirojpur, he added.
Nearly 49,000 houses were destroyed by the cyclone and 45,000 damaged, he said.
The cyclone hit 10 coastal districts damaging crops of a vast tract of land, uprooting a large number of trees and other structures.
The worst cyclone-affected districts are Barguna and Phatualkali as a huge number of poor people have become victims of the storm, the DG added.
The government instantly distributed 20kg of rice and Tk3,000 to each affected families, he said.
Due to prompt measures taken by the government, the cyclone-hit southern districts witnessed fewer casualties, damage of property during the storm, Wazed added.
70 of 72 unions under eight upazilas of Patuakhali district, 42 unions under six upazilas of Barguna district and seven upazilas of Bhola district were affected by the cyclone.
The worst-hit upazilas are Kalapara, Rangabali, Dashmina, Mirjaganj, Galachipa and Baufal of Patuakhali district, Patharghata of Barguna, Char Nizam, Char Kukrimukri, Monpura and Char Fashion of Bhola district.
