DCC polls likely in June

Update : 14 May 2013, 04:05 AM

The Election Commission will announce the schedules for the much awaited Dhaka South and North City Corporation polls after getting a copy of the High Court verdict that withdrew the stay order on the elections.

The EC will hold a meeting next week to discuss voter list, delimitation of the two corporations and holding the elections, Election Commissioner M Shah Newaz told the media at his secretariaton Monday.

A senior EC official wishing to stay anonymous told the Dhaka Tribune that the EC was planning to hold the elections in June. The decision will be finalised after holding the full commission meeting.

“Now that the High Court has withdrawn the stay order we want to hold the elections as soon as possible,” he said.

The High Court yesterday withdrew its stay order on the elections.

“We will sit for a meeting next week discussing the two city corporation polls. After getting a copy of the verdict, we will decide when to declare the schedule,” the commissioner said.

“We’ve waited a long time to hold these polls so now we won’t delay,” he added.

According to officials, the EC has taken all kinds of preparation to hold the DCC elections. The EC has planned to hold the elections using the updated voter list, which has already been prepared. The local government ministry has already completed the delimitation of the DCC South and DCC North City Corporations.

The polls were originally slated for May 24, 2012. But the High Court issued a three month stay order on the polls due to the complexity of the voter list and delimitation of the area following a petition submitted by Advocate Manzill Murshid. Later the High Court extended the time frame of the stay order.
