Two people were killed, hundreds of houses damaged and trees uprooted as storms swept over Meherpur, Kustia, Lalmonirhat and Panchagarh districts.
In Meherpur, a boy was killed and 15 people injured, and more than 300 thatched homes were damaged as a storm lashed Gangni and Sadar upazilas on Saturday night.
The boy was identified as Hridoy, 13, son of Abdul Karim of Bhorat village under Gangni upazila.
Locals said he was injured when a branch fell on him in the courtyard of their house.
He was rushed to Gangni Health Complex and later moved to Kustia General Hospital but he died in the early hours of Sunday.
Electricity supplies have been seriously disrupted in Meherpur district due to the storm.
Sources at the Gangni Polly Bidyut office said several electricity poles have been knocked over and trees and branches fell on electricity wires in many places.
Shailendra Nath Pal, the deputy general manager of the office, said it would take two days to fully restore the electricity supply across the upazilas.
A large number of houses and educational institutions partially collapsed and a number of trees were uprooted.
Due to the downpour and accompanying hailstorm, standing crops including vegetable fields were damaged across the district.
Meanwhile in Kustia, a woman was killed as a nor’wester swept over four unions in Daulatpur upazila.
She was identified as Amirun Nesa, 40, wife of Asir Ali of Sarishaduli village in Boalia union.
The woman died instantly when a coconut tree fell on her house during the storm which hit four unions – Boalia, Khalishakundi, Rifatpur and Arua – at about 8 pm, said UNO Arun Kumar Mondal.
At least 30 thatched houses were damaged and over 100 trees uprooted during the storm.
Meanwhile in Lalmonirhat district at least 25 people were injured as a nor’wester hit four upazilas on Saturday night. The injured were admitted to different health complexes, local sources said.
About 2,000 thatched houses were damaged and many large trees along the roadside were uprooted and some electricity poles fell over.
Various crops, especially maize, were damaged by the storm, sources of the district agricultural extension department said.
The electricity supply in the whole district was cut from Saturday night to yesterday afternoon as six electricity poles fell over in Lalmonirhat sadar and Hatinadha upazila.
Saleh Uddin, 52, a resident of Mohendranagar village of Lalmonirhat upazila said: “My three thatched houses were damaged by the storm.”
“Now with my three other family members, I am living under the open sky.”
Jobeda Bewa, 58, of Sholmari village in Kaliganj upazila said: “I had a semi-thatched house that was damaged on Saturday night. I don’t have the ability to rebuild the house.”
Mobarok Hossain, 72, of the village Mohammadpur in Aditmari said that his tin house was damaged as a big tree was uprooted and fell on it during the storm and his almost one hectare of maize was damaged.
Meanwhile in Panchagarh district over 200 thatched houses were damaged and about 550 trees uprooted in Tetulia upazila where a storm hit on Sunday morning.
Tetulia union parishad chairman Anisur Rahman said the seasonal storm also damaged different crops over vast tracts of land.
