Tete-a-tete with singer Nancy

Update : 04 May 2013, 02:30 PM

The fans of Nancy, one of the most popular pop artistes of recent times, might not know that their favourite singer has a background of Nazrul and folk music. Before the versatile singer ventured into the world of pop-music she was an enlisted artiste at Bangladesh Betar from 2002 as a Nazrul, modern and folk singer and began performing for BTV in several programmes, including “Saptdinga” and “Jibon Bangladesh Moron Bangladesh” till 2005.

Nancy has worked as a playback singer from 2006. In the popular films "Akash Chowa Bhalobasha," she worked with Habib Wahid and the sound-tracks "Prithibir Joto Shukh” and "Hawaye Hawaye Dolna Doley” was well received by the audience of Bangladesh. She was awarded with the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2011 for her playback work in the film “Projapoti.” Her career as a pop-singer started with the release of her solo-album “Bhalobasha Odhora” in 2010.

In a rendezvous with Dhaka Tribune, popular pop singer Nancy said that she is planning to start work on her new album which is scheduled to be released during Eid-ul-Azha.

Tell us about your recent projects:

Well, recently I am busy with live shows abroad. I am making travel plans for Zurich and Bahrain, hopefully if everything goes right I will be performing in Zurich on May 19 and in Bahrain on May 24. The shows are organised by non-residential Bangladeshis.

What do you think about the current scenario of the music industry?

The situation is deteriorating day by day. Recording companies are willing to sign artists with a good sponsor only. The situation will become worse if piracy is left uncontrolled. I have observed that people in villages are very loyal buyers of local CD’s. I saw a tea stall owner in Netrokona was playing my CD for the entertainment of the crowd gathered in his shop. I was very touched.

Who motivated you to become a singer?

My mother is the reason I have become successful today, she supported me throughout my entire life. I hope to do the same for my daughter Rodela, who is the silver lining of my life.

You have earned quite a reputation as a playback singer. Did you enjoy the transition from playback singer to pop-singer?

Well to be completely honest, I enjoy playback singing a lot. I prefer staying out of the picture rather than face an audience. During my career as a playback singer I was prompted time and again to perform on stage.
