Renowned people’s singer Fakir Alamgir will perform at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, Gulshan on Friday at 6:30pm. In an interview with Dhaka Tribune, Fakir Alamgir said:
What you are going to perform today?
With the Savar tragedy in mind, I will perform many of my popular songs such as, “1886-er Pahela May,” “Buk Bedhey Lortey Hobey,” “Ei Lorai Bachar Lorai,” “Lanchhito Nipirito Jonotar,” “Duniar majdur ek hou,” “Mor Sokhinar Kopaler Tip,” “Dam Diye Kinechi Bangla,” “O Sokhina, Shantahar,” and “Naam Tar Chhilo John Henry,” along with many more songs.
What about your new albums?
My new album titled “Mayer Rin” will be released on the occasion of eid-ul-fitr and it will be a collection of all my hit songs of my 45 year old career. At the end of the year another album titled “Dunia Kapano Manusher Gaan” will be released, with songs paying tribute to famous political leaders such as Lenin, Martin Luther King, Che Gueavara, Hugo Chevez, Fidel Castro, Shurjo Sen, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Nelson Mandela , Mawlana Bhashani and many more. After that I will release another “Gono Sangeet” album titled “Shopother Gaan.”
Where have you performed on May Day?
May Day hold immense importance worldwide and this year in Bangladesh, it held more significance because of the Savar tragedy. I performed at many cultural events, TV shows, May Day concert at Fantasy Kingdom, Dhaka University campus and at a meeting organised by Gazipur Sromik League.
In all the programmes, I spoke of the rights of day labourers and tried to inspire people with my songs. “Gono Sangeet” is a powerful medium that can inspire and unite people and I hope that one day the rights of the working class will be realised to the extent that very little room will be left for risings and protests.
Fakir Alamgir has his own style of music which is the blend of traditional folk song with western instruments. He became an accomplished Gono Sangeet singer to speak of the struggle of the masses. He has released many albums most of which are immensely popular. He is also the founder of the cultural organization Rishijo Shilpi Goshthi.
