Hollywood's ten most romantic films of all time

Update : 30 Apr 2013, 09:05 AM

10. Casablanca

Widely hailed as one of the most romantic films of all time, this 1942 Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman starrer has found more admirers with time. Lauded for its timelessness and universal appeal, Casablanca boasts of the finest onscreen chemistry between Bogart and Bergman.

9. Jerry Maguire

Cameron Crowe's acclaimed 1996 sports drama starring Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger isn't without its share of romantic moments. Cruise's boyish charm and Zellweger's “You had me at hello” had an entire generation swooning.

8.Titanic

Nobody would believe you if you said you didn't weep when a shivering Jack steadfastly held on to Rose's hand as they struggled to stay afloat while Titanic sank in front of their eyes. With its tragic climax and protagonists as heart-breakingly young, beautiful and passionate as Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, this James Cameron 1997 epic is in all romance lists for the long haul.

7. Pretty Woman

Gary Marshall's award-winning romantic comedy Pretty Woman had a lot going for it. Julia Robert's vivacious yet down-to-earth role, with her easy charm and bright-as-sunshine smile was a fitting match for Richard Gere's brooding yet deeply sensitive businessman’s role.

6. Ghost

The 1990 romantic fantasy film is remembered fondly for one of the most romantic scenes in cinematic history. With Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, two of the best looking stars of their generation, the pottery wheel scene have long been etched in the fans' minds.

5. Dirty Dancing

One of the most popular romance films to spawn spoofs and tributes alike, Dirty Dancing made an entire generation fall in love with dance and made Patrick Swayze a heartthrob. Thanks to the song “I've Had  the time of my life” and dialogues like “I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you,” Dirty Dancing has long been named the “Star Wars” for Women.

4. Notting Hill

When Julia Roberts is the girl standing in front of you, looking forlorn, and says, “After all... I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her,” you do as she says. This 1999 romance further cemented Roberts' position as the romance queen.

3. Wall-E

One wouldn't have high hopes from a computer-animated romantic science fiction film but Wall-E proved all our pre-conceived notions about sci-fi wrong. Wall-E's persevering love for EVE, a cold and hostile advanced robot who later warms up to him and brings him back to life in the end is one of the most heartwarming stories to ever manifest on screen.

2. The Notebook

A permanent fixture on “most romantic” lists ever since its release in 2004, this Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams starrer is a story of young love forced to change its course due to a war and long separation. The film has often been described as heart-breakingly beautiful.

1.  Love Actually

And Love Actually claims the number one spot in this list. The Christmas-themed romantic comedy tells ten stories of people whose lives cross each other's paths in the most unexpected and hilarious ways.
