Savar municipality stripped of authority to approve construction

Update : 29 Apr 2013, 02:33 PM

The government has ordered Savar Municipality authorities to refrain from approving site plans and construction of buildings until further orders.

The Local Government Division (LGD) issued the order Sunday after hundreds died and thousands were left traumatised and with serious injuries when the eight-storey Rana Plaza collapsed in Savar, outside of the capital Dhaka. The structure was built with the “approval” of Savar Municipality.

The LGD, in a separate order, also suspended two officials – executive engineer Md Ehtemam Hossain and assistant engineer Md Aslam Miah, who are alleged to have certified the construction of the building. The two men were arrested in connection with the collapse, and related damages and deaths as a result.

State minister of local government Jahangir Kabir Nanak on Saturday announced the ministry was issuing an order to Savar Municipality stripping it off any authority to approve the construction of any buildings or site plans.
