Second phase of rescue operations in progress

Update : 29 Apr 2013, 07:29 AM

Inter-Services Public Relations director Shahinul Islam said the second phase of rescue operations which started last night is going on in a vertical approach with 12 concrete slabs already lifted.

The second phase, termed by the army as “equipmental evacuation”, started around 11:30pm last night with heavy crane, lifting equipment, ladder crane, cutting equipment, dumper, lighting vehicle, body racks and dozers to be used in the process.

He further informed our reporter that the rescuers are trying to lift at least seven more concrete slabs each weighing five to seven tonnes after which they will try to go down to see if there were any more bodies.

Earlier last night, around 10pm, a fire broke out in one of the tunnels made through the rubble. The reason for the fire was assumed to be the clothes of the garment factories which caught fire while the rescuers were cutting the steel rods to save the trapped.

The fire, however, was extinguished with a quick response from the firefighters but smoke was still pervasive in the air till late at night.
