Three relatives of Sohel Rana held

Update : 27 Apr 2013, 03:28 AM

Law enforcers yesterday arrested three relatives of Sohel Rana, the owner of Rana Plaza.

Rana’s cousin Jahangir Alam, his wife Munni Begum and Rana’s uncle Anowar Hossain were arrested from their home at around 9am, Dhaka Division’s Additional Superintendent of Police Shyamol Kumar Mukharjee told Dhaka Tribune.

When asked why these people had been arrested, ASP Mukharjee refused to answer saying it was for the sake of investigation. When asked about the progress in arresting Rana, he said that the law enforcers were trying their best and several operations had been launched.

Police and local sources said Rana defied orders of the mayor and officials on Tuesday to keep Rana Plaza closed when it developed cracks. He told the ill-fated garment workers that he had been assured by an engineer that the building was in no danger, and it would last a hundred years.

Sohel Rana, 30, local Jubo League leader and the owner of Rana Plaza, used to live at 71/b, Bazar road, another eight-storey building which was also declared out of service by Savar Police on Thursday after a crack appeared in a pillar.

Rana, who studied up to eighth grade at a high school in Savar, originally came from Singair, Manikganj. Locals say after dropping out from high school, Rana became a political activist of the ruling Awami League under patronage of its local leaders.

Speaking to this correspondent, some locals accused Sohel Rana of racketeering and drug dealing.

On Wednesday morning, immediately before the accident took place, Rana was reportedly having a meeting at the building with his men, planning an anti-hartal procession. He is rumoured to have been injured in the building collapse. He has not been seen since.
