Savar UNO issued ‘risk-free’ certificate for Rana Plaza

Update : 26 Apr 2013, 09:45 AM

The upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Savar had issued a “risk-free” certificate after the building of Rana Plaza, which collapsed early on Wednesday, disclosed State Minister for Labour and Employment Munnujan Sufian.

She revealed the information to reporters yesterday after a meeting with the parliamentary standing committee members of labour and employment ministry.

UNO Kabir Hossain Bhuiyan, despite his divisive role in issuing the clearance, was made a member of the home affairs ministry committee to probe into the accident that killed upwards of 200 people and injured a thousand others.

“The local UNO would also be held [responsible] along with some other people on the charge of instigating the mass killing that occurred on Wednesday. He provided the building owners with a certificate that stated that it was risk-free,” the minister said.

She also said that a total of five cases had been filed in the labour court against four garment factory owners and the owner of the building to ensure that families of the victims get damages for their loss and benefits thereof.

“Those responsible will be caught within a short time,” she said.

Israfil Alam, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on labour ministry, demanded a neutral probe into the incident and immediate arrest of the garments personnel and owner of the building who are responsible for the tragedy.

He said that the government must arrest those people immediately, and no one should say anything that may influence the investigation and corrupt the course of justice.

When contacted over phone however, Kabir Hossain Bhuiyan refused to comment on the issue.
