PM slams critics of Savar rescue operation

Update : 25 Apr 2013, 04:20 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has come down hard on the critics of the rescue operation of the Savar building collapse.

“Instead of talking big in the television talk shows, I urge you to cooperate with the rescue operation. Salvage at least one of the trapped ones and prove that you are responsible citizens,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina made the remarks while addressing a meeting with Awami League leaders from Tangail in the capital today (Thursday).

Pointing to the fact that nearly 90% of the buildings in the capital had been erected breaching building codes, the premier said, “We will not find a single person for the rescue works if a massive earthquake hits the metropolitan in future.”

Criticising the frequent opposition hartals, Hasina said,“The only thing they [the opposition] want is to destroy the country.”

Earlier yesterday, Sheikh Hasina thanked the opposition at the parliament for withdrawing the hartal following the Savar tragedy.
