Mountaineer Wasfia eyeing Mount McKinley

Update : 23 Apr 2013, 07:32 AM

Wasfia Nazreen, the second Bangladeshi woman to scale Mount Everest, is all set for her new expedition in North America as part of her ‘Bangladesh on Seven Summits’ campaign.

At a press briefing in the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) in the capital’s Dhanmondi area Monday, Wasfia revealed her plans for climbing Mount McKinley, also known as Denali, the highest peak in North America.

Wasfia flies to the USA today to scale McKinley, which stands at a height of 6,194 metres.

A rights activist, writer and development practitioner, Wasfia launched the Bangladesh on Seven Summits campaign in July 2011, marking the 40th anniversary of the country’s independence, aiming to climb the highest peaks on each of the world’s seven continents.

She has already ascended Aconcagua in South America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Everest in Asia and Elbrus in Europe.

In yesterday’s press briefing, Wasfia also shared the experiences of her latest expedition to the 5,621 metres Mount Elbrus in Russia.

Appearing as confident as ever, Wasfia said: “I climbed the Elbrus during winter. Very few people have tried that. People usually climb the Elbrus in the summer. I faced wind speeds of up to 35 miles per hour and temperatures of minus 35C. I had to be treated for snow blindness as well. I dedicate this achievement to the martyrs of the [Liberation War].”

“I began [that] climb on March 22 and reached the base cap on March 28,” the mountaineer added.

Wasfia also said that she was looking to climb North America’s highest peak by June.

Also present at the briefing was the First Secretary of the Russian Federation Alexander P Demin, who labeled her the symbol for Bangladesh. “Wasfia has taken Bangladesh to a new height and has promoted the country across the world,” he said.

Artur R. Zakaev, chief of protocol of the Russian embassy in Dhaka, assured Wasfia of all the necessary cooperation for any future expeditions she may undertake in Russia.
