Update : 18 Apr 2013, 03:10 PM

Five organisations linked to export-import business through Benapole port on Wednesday threatened to go on an indefinite strike at the port if extortion by the handling workers in the name of tips is not stopped within 72 hours.

A letter signed by president of Benapole C&F Agents’ Association Shamsur Rahman asked port director Abdul Awal to take step to put an end to the extortion by the workers within 72 hours.

He alleged that the handling workers forcefully collect Tk 2,000-3,000 from every truck in the name of tips while loading and unloading goods.

The other associations are Transport Owners’ Association, Benapole Land Port Importers and Exporters’ Association, C&F Agent Workers’ Union and Jhikargachha-Navaron-Benapole Truck Owners’ Association.

The port director said the higher authorities were informed of the matter, hoping that the matter would be sorted out within the deadline.
