Exports to Europe post moderate growth in July-Feb of current fiscal

The country’s exports to key destinations like Germany, UK and France posted moderate growth in July-February of the current fiscal (2012-13) as compared to the same period of the last fiscal (2011-12).

In July-February of the current fiscal, exports to Germany totaled US$ 2,556.68 m, which was 14.69 percent of the country’s total export earnings for the eight-month period. Of the amount, knitwear accounted for $ 1,386.57 m, woven garments $ 979.55 m and frozen shrimp $ 40.89 m, according to the latest Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) figures.

The EPB figures showed exports to the UK during July-February totaled $ 1,803.16 m, which was 10.36 percent of the total export earnings for the period.

Export of RMG items to the UK accounted for $ 1,590.22 m in July-February of 2012-13 as against $ 1,357.69 m during the same period of the previous fiscal (2011-12), showing a 17.13 percent growth. The home textile export to the UK during the period was $ 56.06 m, frozen shrimp $ 61.83 m and bicycles $ 38.20 m.

Exports to France during the July-February period of the current fiscal increased to $ 954.52 m, which accounted for 5.49 percent of the total export earnings for the period.

RMG exports to France rose to $ 876.96 m during the eight-month period of the current fiscal as against $ 833.45 m during the same period of the previous fiscal, showing a 5.22 percent growth.

Exports to Italy totaled $ 656.13 m during the period with knitwear accounting for $ 355.72 m, woven garment $ 222.45 m and leather $ 33.31 m.

Exports to Belgium amounted to $ 469.47 m that included knitwear $ 196.42 m, woven garment $ 161.57 m and frozen shrimp $ 55.04 m.

Export earnings from the USA, the largest market for Bangladesh goods, registered a growth of 4.70 percent in July-February of the current fiscal totaling $ 3,471.48 m, which was 19.95 percent of the total export earnings for the period.

The Netherlands, another big export destination for Bangladesh, imported goods worth $ 456.86 m during the July-February period. The amount included knitwear $ 208.74 m, woven garment $ 165.94 m and frozen shrimp $ 37.51 m.

Among the Middle East, Far East and South Asian countries, exports to Iran fetched $ 46.64 m during the first eight months of the current fiscal while that of Japan totaled $ 480.49 m, Singapore $ 99.96 m and China $ 295.23 m.

Among the South Asian countries, exports to India amounted to $ 383.62 m during the period that included jute and jute made goods $ 89.36 m and woven garment $ 42.02 m while exports to Pakistan totaled $ 42.34 m, including jute and jute made goods worth $ 34.21 m.
