Derailed train kills one in Banani

A man was killed and several others were injured in the capital around 12 noon as a Chittagong-bound train derailed and fell upon them at Chairmainbari slum near Sainik club at Banani in the capital.

The deceased was Mojibur Rahman, 45. He was rushed to the CMH after the accident.

Patrol inspector of police Abul Hossain said the 4 injured were taken to different hospitals; some of them were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Sub-inspector of Banani police station Abu Bakar confirmed the number of injured, of which three were children including the deceased’s three-year-old son.The wife of the deceased was also injured.

The victims of the accident were inside the slums beside the rail tracks.

Mofidul Islam, a local, said Mojibur was asleep inside his hut when the compartment fell on it.

Abdul Ali, a railway staff, said the air box between the compartments had gotten locked, preventing the wheels from turning. The compartments derailed as a result of the engine running its own course.

Sumi Begum, who witnessed the accident, said she heard a noise when she came out of her home and saw a compartment tilted, which brushed against a banyan tree before getting derailed.

OC Abdul Majid of GRP thana said the container started from Inland Container Depot of Kamlapur Railway Station for Chittagong.

A team of the Bangladesh army has already started a rescue drive at the spot.

An army officersaid they contacted railway offices for their rescue effort immediately after the accident took place, but the rescue train arrived at 2:25pm.

The derailed compartments with two engines were removed from the scene.
