Bangabandhu in people’s eyes

How do the people of today’s Bangladesh see Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman? Dhaka Tribune’s Nawaz Farhin Antara finds out

Update : 16 Mar 2020, 11:52 PM

Bangabandhu gave us freedom; it is our duty to make it truly meaningful. All the government, non-government and autonomous organizations should come forward and provide their services with honesty – to all citizens. This is my wish in the Mujib Year.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is intimately involved with my travels. This country became independent under his leadership. If he hadn’t been born, we would not get Bangladesh; we would not get our red and green flag. My pride is this flag; I have travelled to 140 countries carrying this flag, and with it I also carried the spirit of Bangabandhu.

My grandfather was a freedom fighter. He used to tell me stories of the war – about Bangabandhu and his leadership – when I was a child. “If Bangabandhu hadn’t been born, we would never get Bangladesh,” my grandfather used to tell me. “We wouldn’t be able to speak in Bangla.” Bangabandhu was the reason people went to the Liberation War in 1971. His fiery spirit inspired people; he made them aware of their rights.

After the war, the women who were tortured by the Pakistan army were abandoned by their families. Bangabandhu took their responsibilities, addressed them as 'Ma' (mother). He gave them the honour of  Birangona (Bangla for war heroine). To me, that is the greatest example of respecting women.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the architect of independent Bangladesh. The role that Bangabandhu played in rehabilitating the women who had been raped and  tortured by the Pakistan army in 1971 is unforgettable. He took the role of their guardian.

For the Bangali people, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the name of an idea, a philosophy. He showed us the way to liberty; we are citizens of an independent country because of him. No leader can unify a nation like Bangabandhu did.

If the country had not been liberated, we would’ve had to learn Pakistani language. I would not be able speak in Bangla, nor would my children. Bangabandhu made our country independent. My father joined the war answering Bangabandhu’s call on March 7.

Freedom fighters fought against the Pakistani army answering Sheikh Mujib’s call for liberation. He was imprisoned himself to free us. Everything we have now as a nation is because of him. If he hadn’t released us from Pakistan’s occupation, we would still be tortured by them.
