A person has been killed in violence centring on the Union Parishad election in Chachra Union of Jessore.
The deceased is food vendor Mujibur Rahman Bishey.
Detective Branch (DB) of police OC Ali Ahmed Hashmi said a group of miscreants hurled bombs in front of the polling centre at Bhaturia Government Primary School around 11am on Thursday.
“Mijubur was selling food outside the polling centre when the explosions took place. He was injured in the blast.”
In retaliation, police fired bullets to bring the situation under control.
The DB official said Mujibur was declared dead by the doctors when taken to the Jessore 250-bed Hospital.
However, locals claimed Mujibur was struck in the head by a bullet during the police shooting.
Hospital's doctor Abdullah Al-Mamun said: “A bullet-wound was found in Mujibur's head. He has several splinters in his body.”
Following the incident, Presiding Officer Md Salim postponed the voting in the centre.
The second phase of the election in 639 Union Parishads is underway.
