Professor Dr Shirin Akhtar of Bangla department has been made the pro-vice chancellor (Pro VC) of Chittagong University (CU).
With her appointment, the university got its first female Pro VC in its history since its establishment in 1966.
The newly appointed Pro VC took her office at the university on Monday, said a university press release.
“She was appointed as Pro VC of CU by honorable chancellor for next four years under University Act 1973 14(1)”, stated the release.
CU’s VC Professor Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury congratulated the new Pro VC. Professor Dr Shirin Akhtar sought cooperation from university’s staffs and students.
University sources said Prof Shirin obtained her PhD in 1991 from Jadavpur University in India. She jointed at university’s Bangla department in 1996 as lecturer. She was promoted to professor in 2006. Prof Shirin is a lifetime member of Bangla Academy.
