Police have lodged a case against more than one thousand unidentified people over the violence took place centring on the Union Parishad elections in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur.
Mathbaria police station Sub-Inspector Sanowar Hossain Khan filed the case on Wednesday night against 1,200-1,300 unnamed persons for vandalising vehicles, snatching ballot papers, and barring lawmen from their duty.
Khandakar Mustafizur Rahman, Mathbaria police station officer-in-charge, on Thursday confirmed filing the case to Bangla Tribune, a sister concern of Dhaka Tribune.
Five people were killed when Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members opened fire on a group of people who were trying to steal ballot boxes from the Safa Degree College polling centre at Dhonisafa union in the district's Mathbaria upazila.
The incident took place after a group of people swooped on the BGB men while the law enforcers were carrying the ballot boxes.
“In retaliation, the BGB members opened fire on the miscreants as per the directive given by Executive Magistrate Kazi Ziaul, leaving at least three people dead on the spot and several others injured,” said District Superintendent of Police Walid Hossain.
