A court yesterday sent suspended Khulna City Corporation (KCC) mayor Mohammad Moniruzzaman, who is also the general secretary of Khulna metropolitan unit BNP, to jail in two cases for attacking police and vandalising vehicles.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Arup Kumar Goshwami gave the order as the accused appeared before the court and lodged a bail petition.
On June 11, 2015, police pressed charges against 52 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, including the suspended KCC mayor, in the two cases.
On November 2 of the year, the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry issued a notice suspending the BNP-backed mayor in this connection.
The court accepted the charge sheet of the case on November 22 and issued arrest warrant against 16 of the accused.
