At least seven people have been killed in violence in Pirojpur, Cox's Bazar and Sirajganj following the first phase of the Union Parishad election.

In Pirojpur's Mathbaria, BGB personnel opened fire on men who tried to snatch ballot boxes from them after the election.

“BGB troopers were carrying ballot boxes from Safa Degree College polling centre at Dhonisafa union when they were attacked by a group of men. The border guards opened fire as per Executive Magistrate Kazi Ziaul's order, killing at least three and injuring several others,” Police Superintendent Walid Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune.

Mathbaria police station OC Khandaker Mostafizur Rahman said two others had died while being taken to Barisal.

In Cox's Bazar, a gunfight between supporters of the Awami League candidate and the renegade aspirant left one Shafik Alam, 25, dead.

Locals said the skirmish broke out when votes were being counted at Majherpara polling station at Shahfarid Dwip under Teknaf's Shaparan Union on Tuesday.

Shafik and 15 others were shot during the clash.

He died while being taken to hospital, Teknaf Upazila Health Complex's resident medical officer Pronoy Rudra said.

A clash between supporters of two UP candidates at Sirajganj's Dhangara Union left a woman dead and at least 10 others injured. The victim was the mother-in-law of Nawab Ali, who won the polls.

Earlier in the day, clashes between rivals killed the brother of an UP member candidate in Jhalakathi.
