UP polls: Vote counting underway

Voting in the first phase election at 717 Union Parishads has been held amid sporadic clashes, violence and reported rigging.

The vote counting is now underway.

Voting began around 8am and continued till 4pm without a break.

A BNP-backed chairman candidate of Union Parishad was allegedly attacked by Awami League men in Roshunia union under Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj district during the poll.

In Noakhali, miscreants shot the polling officer of a polling centre in Hatiya upazila around 7:30am.

At least nine people were injured as some supporters of member candidates at two union parishads under Kamalnagar upazila were locked in a clash over the siege of polling stations in Lakshmipur.

In the first phase of the elections, 36,456 candidates – 3,034 for chairman posts, 25,847 for member posts and 7,575 for reserved-seat women posts – are contending for the aforementioned positions.

A total of 54 chairmen, 179 members and 54 reserved-seat women members have already been elected uncontested.
