A glance into the life of neurosurgeon Prof Rashiduddin

Prof Rashiduddin Ahmad was born on January 3, 1939 in Cox's Bazar district. He was the founder general secretary of Bangladesh Society of Neurosciences 1987 and then became the founder president of Bangladesh Society of Neurosurgeons in 1998.

He was also the second president of South Asian Association of Neurological Societies.

By his initiative, the government accepted the plan for the establishment of the Institute of Neurosciences in 2000.

Prof Rashiduddin completed his MBBS from Dhaka Medical College in 1960. Then he did a residency surgical job under Prof Asiruddin and then went to UK in 1963 for higher studies. There he decided to take up Neurosurgery as his career and got the golden opportunity to get into a residency job at the Edinburgh University in 1965.

He came back to Dhaka in April 1970 and started the first ever nonsurgical services of the then Est Pakistan at the Institute of Post Graduate Medicine and Research.

He joined the Liberation War in 1971 and he had to flee from Dhaka in a boat with guerilla boys and reached Khaled Mosharrof's camp in Agartala. Then he went back to Edinburgh and worked there for five more years. He came back to Dhaka again in 1976 and resumed his work.

Prof Rashiduddin was the captain of first National Basketball Team and was also the captain of Bangladesh Davis Cup Team.

He received "The Independence Day Award" in 1999 for his contribution in the field of medical service.

He published and presented about 50 scientific papers in national and international journals and conferences.
