Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque has around 180,000 law enforcers will provide security in three phases during the Union Parisahd elections.
He made the statement while addressing a press briefing at the Police Headquarters on Sunday morning.
The IGP said: “Around 180,000 law enforcers will provide security in three phases during the election. Of the total, 40,000 will be police officials, RAB and BGB will provide 9,000 each while the rest will be provided by Ansar and VDP.”
He said security will be provided from a day ahead of the elections till the following day.
Replying to a query, he said: “So far around 208 incidents of violence have been reported over the elections. Of which, around 102 were reported alone in Barisal.
“At least seven people have died and 508 injured in these incidents.”
He said some 142 cases and 55 general diaries were filed over the violence related to Union Parisahd election.
Meanwhile, police detained 95 people in connection to the incidents.
He also urged the candidates and their supporters to restrain from getting into clashes in the polling centres as this might lead to the cancellation of the candidacy or compel the police to file a criminal case against the culprits.
The first phase of Union Parishad elections would be held on March 22.
