Young voters want to see technological advancement

Update : 18 Mar 2016, 07:05 PM

Young voters in Khulna’s Dacope upazila say they prefer candidates who are honest and will work for ensuring technological access in the area.

Shafiqul Islam, a new voter in Ward 5 of Pankhali union, said his first criterion to choose a candidate is honesty.

„Besides, I will vote for the contestant who will prioritise progress and development through the application of technology. I believe it is technology that can contribute to the overall development of the upazila,” he said.

Taiyabur Rahman, an undergraduate student who is a voter in Kamarkhola union’s Ward 9, said the candidate who will be elected chairman should make the whole union a Wi-Fi zone.

„This should be the chairman’s first and foremost task. Also, he should work for providing cheap internet connection.”

Election candidates are also trying to woo the young voters during campaigns by promising to meet their demands.

They are also planning to build their presence on the web – creating personal websites for example – as part of campagins as they know that new and young voters spend a lot of time on the internet and mobile phone.

Nahida Sultana, a voter in Bajua union, said she wants to see a new chairman.

“This is the first time I am going to cast my vote and I will choose a candidate who has honesty and competence.

“The chairman should work for the betterment of destitute people and he should be able to think outside the box,” she said.

Polls in the upazila’s nine unions are scheduled for March 22. There are 34 chairman candidates and 99 reserved-seat candidates.

The upazila has 106,691 voters.
