At least five people, including four activists of Jubo League, have been killed when a picnic bus rammed into a human haulier in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur.
The deceased are Jubo League activists Tufan Khan, Nazrul Islam, Anis Hossain, and Md Jiron, and human haulier driver Tuku Sheikh.
Witnesses said the incident took place around 7pm Thursday while the activists of the ruling party's youth wing were returning home from the district town after attending a joy procession on the occasion of the 97th birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Tuku died on the spot, Tufan, Nazrul and Anis succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Meherpur General Hospital while Jiron died on his way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said district Police Super Hmidul Alom.
He said: “Twelve more activists of the JL have also sustained injuries. Of them, Rashidul Islam, Meser Ali, Monirul Islam and Hasibul Islam have been shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while the rest are now undergoing treatment at Meherpur General Hospital.”
Following the incident, angry locals set the picnic bus ablaze.
Being informed, firefighters reached the spot and put the blaze out on Thursday night.
