Court again rejects petition to stay witness deposition

Update : 14 Mar 2016, 07:38 PM

A Narayanganj court has rejected for the fifth time a petition from the counsels of Nur Hossain and Lt Col (retd) Tarek Sayeed – the two key accused in the seven-murder case – to stay the recording of witness deposition.

Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Syed Enayet Hossain, however, granted a time petition from the defence and fixed March 21 for recording testimonies from Nur and Tarek.

Plaintiff Selina Islam Beauty, slain panel mayor Nazrul Islam’s wife who yesterday answered questions from counsels of four of Nur’s associates, will also finish her deposition on the same day.

Yesterday, only two of the 11 witnesses scheduled to appear were present at the court; their depositions were heard. With the exceptions of Nur and Tarek’s counsels, the lawyers representing the other 33 suspects cross-examined the two witnesses – Md Yusuf, the brother of slain car driver Ibrahim, and eyewitness Mohammad Hossain.

The defence counsels of Nur and Tarek also sought more time to cross-examine the plaintiff, pointing out to the court that a writ petition filed with the High Court – seeking the scrapping of the murder case and challenging the legality of charge framing was yet to be resolved. Later, the court set March 21 for the next witness submission.
