Fire destroys over 60 homes

A fire in Dinajpur’s Khansama has destroyed over 60 homes, killed six farm animals and caused almost Tk 1 crore worth of damage. No loss of life was reported.

The accident took place in Sharkarpara, a neighbourhood in Bherbheri union under Khansama, around 10:30pm Saturday.

Police said the fire originated at the home of one Lalani Roy and spread quickly throughout the area. People informed the police and fire service and tried to put the fire out themselves.

Later, three firefighting units arrived from Nilphamari, some 40 kilometres away, and brought the fire under control after almost two hours of effort.

More than 60 homes, two cows, four goats, two motorcycles and many other valuables were destroyed in the fire.

Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Sajebur Rahman, Khansama police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Krishna Sarker and local Awami League leader Hafiz Sarker visited the area at night.

OC Sarker said 62 families were affected in the fire.
