Police to refrain from settling land rows

Update : 12 Mar 2016, 07:23 PM

Dhaka Metropolitan Police has decided not to deal with issues such as recovering borrowed money or providing assistance in settling land disputes.

DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia disclosed the decision at the monthly crime conference held at DMP Headquarters yesterday.

He said stern action would be taken against any policeman who would act against this decision.

Asaduzzaman said the decision was made as police had often faced lots of criticism in the past when they offered help in such cases.

“The involvement of police in these issues created a bad impression for the police department. This is why we have made the decision with a view to restoring the image of police. But police will only deal with such cases upon court order,” he explained.

The DMP commissioner expressed his satisfaction with the law and order situation of the capital over the last two to three months.

But he said there had been an increase in hijack and snatching, and many people had fallen prey to such crimes.

“When other types of crimes are on the wane, hijack and snatching are rising. Police have been instructed to prevent such crimes at any cost.”

According to sources, at least 26 snatching incidents took place in Dhaka city last month.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Maruf Hossain Sarder told the Dhaka Tribune that the DMP commissioner had instructed police to show zero tolerance for illegal drugs trading.

“Police high-ups were present at the conference. All police officials were asked to work for improving the law and order situation,” he said.

“A number of policemen were also awarded for their good work.”
