Power to be bought from Indian market

A cabinet committee on public purchase has approved a decision to purchase 140MW electricity from Indian open market.

A meeting of the cabinet committee on public purchase presided over by Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday cleared the Power Division proposal to import electricity from India.

After the meeting, Additional Secretary Mustafizur Rahman told reporters the cabinet committee had approved two proposals to import electricity from India.

He said the Bangladesh Power Development Board will import 100MW electricity from Tripura, India with cost per unit of Tk6.26 for the next five years. The government's total cost will be Tk2,443 crore over the next five years, he added.

The additional secretary also said BPDB will also import 40MW electricity from India's Jaiprakash Power Ventures with a per unit cost of Tk4.  A sum of Tk 319.78 crore will be paid to Jaiprakash Power over the next two years for the purchase, according to the Power Division proposal.
