Though construction work on the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover project remains incomplete, a part of the project, from the Satrasta intersection to Ramna Thana will open this March.
Local Government Division (LGD) has decided to send a project summary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to inaugurate the aforementioned part, which is nearly complete, by this week.
“We are preparing to open part of the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover by the end of this month, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attending the ceremony as a chief guest,” said LGD secretary Abdul Malek.
He said: “As per our preparations, we have chosen Officers Club to hold an inauguration ceremony with the concern of the PM.”
Project Director Najmul Alam told the Dhaka Tribune: “Though the total length of the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover is about 10km, the distance from Satrasta to Ramna is only 2.11km, which will be completed by March 20.”
In reply to a query, he said: “City residents have suffered much since 2013, a situation that will be rectified if we open a part of the flyover soon.”
The under construction flyover is being built in three parts. One part is 2.11 kilometers long from Satrasta to Ramna Thana, and expected to be completed by March 20.
The second part, from Eskaton to Mouchak, is 86% complete. The third part from Rampura to Santinagar, via the Malibagh and Rajarbagh police lines, is only 47% complete.
Though the construction of the flyover was expected to end by July 2014 as per the project plan, the construction schedule has gone on to December 2016. So far, the cost has been raised three times for the extended duration.
The Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover was approved by ECNEC in 2011 and the PM laid the inauguration stone on February 16, 2013.
The project’s estimated cost was Tk343.70 crore when ECNEC gave its approval. The second time the cost was raised to Tk772.77 crore, and lastly, it was fixed at Tk1,218.89 crore.
