'Two ministers' remarks are their personal statements'

Update : 08 Mar 2016, 08:39 AM

Law Minister Anisul Huq has said the ministers' remarks on the chief justice are their personal statements, not the government's.

The minister made the statement in a press briefing at his office on Tuesday afternoon.

"The remarks are their personal opinion and their comments does not show the government's scepticism on sub-judice matter or the judiciary,"Anisul said.

He also said none should comment on sub-judice matter because it tarnishes government's image.

Expressing satisfaction over Mir Quasem's verdict, the minister said: "The government is happy with the verdict. The verdict will be executed following proper legal procedures."

Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court issued a contempt rule against Food Minister Qamrul Islam and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque following their recent remarks on Chief Justice SK Sinha.

The nine-member full bench headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha asked the minister to appear before it on March 15 to explain their remarks.

Qamrul on March 5 said Jamaat leader Mir Quasem’s appeal should be reheard by a new Appellate Division bench excluding the CJ.

Justice Sinha criticised the tribunal’s prosecution and investigators for failing to prove four charges against Quasem. He also flayed government for not filing a case against Quasem for appointing lobbyists against the war crimes trial process.

Minister Mozammel demanded Justice Sinha’s resignation. Other speakers who attended the discussion organised by Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee also criticised the chief justice.
