Roads in dilapidated condition due to lack of repairs

Maximum roads in the district have been lying in dilapidated condition due to lack of repairs and maintenance.

Sources said Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) had constructed 150 roads in four upazilas of the district few years ago.

Of them, Charmuguria-Srinodi, Bhurghata-Shashikar-Chalanbeel, Madaripur-Kalkini, Kalkini-Sahebrampur-Koira, Kalkinai-Enaetnagar-Bashgari, Kuldip-Jhaudi-Kalkini, Tekerhat-Kabirajpur, Tekerhat-Kadambari, Rajoir-Srinodi, Madaripur-Shibchar roads have been lying in deteriorating situation.

Locals said the roads were in awful condition as crates and potholes had developed on it for lack of renovation.

Residents of Charmuguria Mithapur, Chilarchar,Kalkini, Surjamoni, Tekerhat, Khoazpur, Natunhat areas said they were the worst sufferers of the dilapidated state of the roads.

Krishak League leader Abdur Rob Bepari of Mithapur told the Dhaka Tribune that commuters were suffering severely as thousands of potholes had developed on maximum roads.

“Transportation of my factory goods are hampered, but the Roads and Highway department did renovation of the road a few years back despite being informed several times about the repair of the road.”

Goods-laden trucks frequently got stuck on potholes that causes long tailback on the road, he added.

Ismail Hossain, a trader at Charmuguria village under Sadar upazila, said a 10-minute ride on the Charmuguria-Srinodi Road from Charmuguria  Bazar to the town takes up to almost two hours.

Joianta Majumder, representative of a drug company, told the Dhaka Tribune that  many portions of the roads in the district road went under knee-deep water because of poor drainage system in rainy season.

He said: “Locals put brick chips on the damaged portion of the road so that traffic could run through the road.

He urged the Roads and Highway department to take immediate measures to repair these roads as soon as possible to ease sufferings of commuters.

When contacted, Deputy Assistant Engineer of Local Government Engineering  Nirmul Kumar Bisws told the Dhaka Tribune that they had informed the higher authorities about the importance of repairing the roads.
