Update : 27 Feb 2016, 10:32 AM

Chittagong Metropolitan Police have sought approval from the home ministry for taking a sedition case against Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam for publishing "corruption stories without verification against Awami League President Sheikh Hasina" based on information provided by the DGFI.

Kotwali police station in Chittagong sent a letter to the ministry on Saturday.

On February 17, Sitakunda upazila Chairman SM Al Mamun, also the president of Chittagong District (North) Jubo League, filed a sedition complaint against Mahfuz Anam with the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Farid Alam.

After hearing the complaint, the court ordered Kotwali police station OC to file an FIR seeking legal approval from authorities concerned.

OC Jasim Uddin of Kotwali police station told the Dhaka Tribune: "As per court’s direction, we forwarded a letter to the secretary of home ministry seeking its approval to record the sedition case against the Daily Star’s editor.

“The letter was sent to the ministry around 12 noon," he added.

At least 79 cases have been filed so far in different districts against Mahfuz Anam since February 3 after on a TV talk show he had admitted that he had made a big mistake by running the stories based on information provided by the DGFI.
