AL-backed panel sweeps Dhaka Bar polls

The Awami League-backed panel has overwhelmingly won the election to the Dhaka Bar Association.

The Awami League-backed white panel won 21 of the 27 posts, while the rest went to the BNP-Jamaat-backed blue panel.

Christie endorses Trump in shock move

New Jersey governor and former Republican candidate Chris Christie is endorsing frontrunner Donald Trump for president, he has announced.

Mr Christie dropped out of the 2016 presidential race after a lacklustre showing in polls and state races.

Syria fighting largely halts as cessation begins

Fighting appeared to stop across most areas of western Syria on Saturday after a landmark "cessation of hostilities" came into effect under a US-Russian plan which warring sides in the five-year conflict have accepted.

The temporary halt in fighting marked the first time world powers have been able to negotiate a pause in Syria's civil war and the United Nations hopes it can lead to a new round of talks to end the conflict.

Throat-slit body found in Narayanganj

Police have discovered the body of a man with his throat cut from the Buriganga river in Fatullah under Narayanganj Sadar upazila.

The recovery was made on Friday night. The identity of the man could not be confirmed yet.

Two of five Uttara fire victims dies

Two of the five victims, who suffered burn injuries in a fire that broke out when a gas pipeline exploded at a residence in the capital’s Uttara area, have died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

DMCH Burn Unit Director Partha Sankar Pal told the Dhaka Tribune: “Sharleen, 15, and his brother 14-month-old Jayan succumbed to their injuries on Friday afternoon, hours after they were admitted to the burn unit with 88% and 74% burns respectively.”
