An accused in Habiganj children murder case has been killed in a “gunfight” with the members of Rapid Action Battalion in Chaklapunji area of the district.
Deceased Bachchu Miah was one of the accused in the case filed over the death of four children in the district's Bahubal area.
RAB 9 Srimangal Camp Company Commander Kazi Moniruzzaman confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
He said they detained one Shaheed in connection with the murder on Wednesday evening.
“During the primary interrogation, Shaheed informed us that Bachchu will flee to India on Thursday morning,” the RAB official said.
Kazi Moniruzzaman: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in the area to arrest Bachchu around 4:30am.
“Bachchu's accomplices opened fire at us when we questioned them sensing their suspicious behaviour.”
In retaliation, RAB officials fired back leaving Bachchu dead instantly.
However, the others managed to flee the scene.
Meanwhile, the police elite force recovered a pistol and two rounds of bullets from the crime scene.
On February 17, police recovered the bodies of four children, aged between seven and ten, from a ditch at Shundratiki village under Bahubal upazila, four days after they went missing.
