Around 3,000 community clinic healthcare providers have begun a hunger strike to demand that their jobs be nationalised.
They began the strike at Central Shaheed Minar around 9am Wednesday.
“After several movements the government gave us assurances, but our problem has not been solved,” Community Clinic Health Care Providers Movement Committee Convener Shahidul Islam said.
“This time we are not going to stop our movement. We will continue our hunger strike until the government fulfils our demand.”
Caregiver Faridul Sadek, who came from Gaibandha to join the protest, said: “Yesterday [Tuesday] we had a programme to besiege the project office in Mohakhali. Today [Wednesday] we are in the last stage of our protest.”
“We were recruited on October 19, 2011 but we have not got any increments, promotions or any other job benefits since then,” he said.
He claimed that the payment of caregivers' salaries was routinely delayed by three or four months.
