Update : 24 Feb 2016, 11:07 AM

A plan to build two elevated expressways, totalling 122 kilometres in length, is on the cards, the road transport minister has announced.

Two elevated expressways connecting Dhaka with Ashulia, and Hemayetpur to the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway are being planned as part of a massive effort to expand the country's highway network.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader announced the plans while speaking to journalists after signing an agreement with consultants High-Point Rendel, UK (HPR) at Setu Bhaban in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

HPR has been brought in to coordinate the various consultants working on the mega project.

“We will build a 42km elevated expressway from Dhaka to Ashulia and the East-West Elevated Expressway from Hemayetpur to the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.

“The East-West Elevated Expressway will be 80 kilometres long.”

The minister said some 31% of construction work on the 6.15 kilometre-long two-tier Padma Multipurpose Bridge had been completed so far.
