Ekushey book fair has been opened to the visitors around 5:30pm Wednesday after a short postponement. However, the authorities have decided to close the fair at 6:30pm today.
The order came as large quantity of books got damaged by the sudden rain, says Dr Jalal Ahmed, member secretary of Ekushey Boi Mela Committee.
Earlier, the Ekushey Boi Mela authorities postponed the fair as a nor’wester accompanied by hailstorm and heavy rainfall swept over the capital.
Dr Jalal Ahmed said: “We have suspended the book fair temporarily in the face of huge damage caused by the rain. It will be open following the improvement the situation.”
A good number of visitors were seen gathered in front of the gate to enter and the rain water inside the fair was being pumped out.
Nor'wester broke down many stalls including Daily Star booth and Bangla Academy Pavilion.
Onneysha Publisher Shahadat Hossain said most of his books were wet in the rain except those stocked inside the stall.
