In memory of legendary Nazrul Sangeet singer Feroza Begum, a Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal Trust Fund has been founded at Dhaka University.
Yesterday, a cheque of Tk60,00,000 was handed over to the authority of Dhaka University (DU) to fund the award and scholarship. Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, the vice-chancellor of DU, received the cheque at his office from Anis Ud Dowla, the chairman of Feroza Begum Foundation. He also happens to be the brother of the famous singer.
The foundation will be awarding gold medals and scholarships to the most deserving students from the Department of Music at the university every year.
On the occasion, Feroza Begum’s brother, Brigadier General (retd) Mosih Ud Dowla, two of her sons, Hameen Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed, Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, Leena Taposhi Khan and Shusmita Anis, a niece and disciple of Begum were present among others.
Family of Feroza Begum formed the Feroza Begum Foundation last year; a year after her demise in 2014. Shusmita Anis has opened Feroza Begum Archive on Anis’s official website: www.shusmitaanis.com.
