Court orders reinvestigation into Boishakh sexual assault

Update : 23 Feb 2016, 08:30 AM

A Dhaka court has ordered Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to run investigation again into the case filed over sexual assault on several women during Pohela Boishakh celebrations at Suhrawardy Udyan and Dhaka University campus last year.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 3 Judge Jayashree Sumadar made the order on Tuesday in reply to a petition filed by Special Public Prosecutor Mahmuda Akter.

The court also asked the PBI authorities to submit the investigation report by March 23.

In the petition, Mahmuda submitted no objection report against the case's final report prepared by police after an investigation. According to the report, police failed to trace any offenders in the incident and they sought dismissal order from the court on the case.

During the case proceedings, police produced the sex offender, Md Kamal, who was arrested in a drive at a residence in the capital's Chawkbazar area.

Kamal is one of the eight perpetrators caught on camera sexually assaulting several women during Pohela Boishakh celebrations.
