NINS hosts major neurosurgery event

Update : 21 Feb 2016, 07:33 PM

Twelve difficult and complicated neurosurgery procedures were held throughout the day yesterday at the National Institute of Neuro-Sciences & Hospital (NINS), with live video feeds of the operations shown to local surgeons for training.

“This is the biggest neurosurgery event in our country as some top-level foreign doctors have also joined and conducted the surgeries with our local surgeons. These day-long operations were projected live so our local surgeons can gain knowledge and expertise from the foreign surgeons,” said NINS Associate Professor Dr Md Raziul Haque

The surgeries were carried out in four different operation theatres. The difficult surgeries included pituitary, spinal, tumour, brain tumour and vascular aneurysm surgeries, he added.

The government would bear all cost of these surgeries, Dr Raziul said.

Neurosurgeons from the US, Germany, Turkey and India conducted the surgeries.

“It is very expensive for our neurosurgeons to get training from abroad. So such a workshop will help our surgeons learn modern surgery techniques, knowledge and skills,” said Dr Raziul, who is also the general secretary of Bangladesh Society of Neurosurgeons.

This live operations were a part of the Pre-congress Cadaveric Workshop held at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on February 19 and 20.

The Sixth South Asian Neurosurgical Congress and Eighth International Scientific Conference will start today and continue until February 24 at the capital’s Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel.
