Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia while visiting the Shaheed Minar yesterday said security has been tightened in the capital for today.
Particularly four-tier security steps were taken around the Central Shaheed Minar for peaceful observance of the International Mother Language Day.
He said the whole area would come under CCTV camera surveillance.
After the president, the prime minister and other VIPs have paid their homage after midnight, other people would be allowed to enter the Shaheed Minar premises through Palashi intersection and exit through Chankharpul and Doyel Chattar intersections after 12:45am, he added.
Asked about the threat on February 21 following the recent recovery of huge amounts of bombs and explosions in Badda and Mohammadpur area, the commissioner said they had taken the measures after assessing the risks.
Pointing at some media reports that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade to Central Shaheed Minar could face obstruction, Asaduzzaman Mia said: “We are servant of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. It is our duty to arrange security for every citizen of the country.”
“If anyone feels insecure, we will ensure security for him/her on the basis of intelligence reports,” he added.
No criminal would be able to launch any attacks on the Central Shaheed Minar premises by breaking their security cordon, the DMP boss said.
