Chumki: Habiganj killers to be tried under special tribunal

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki yesterday said people who were involved in the killing of four schoolboys in Hobiganj would be tried under special tribunal.

The minister said this while talking to journalists after visiting the parents of the four children whose bodies were recovered from a ditch at Sundrateki village, Bahubal police station on Wednesday morning.

The minister said: “If any policeman showed negligence in finding out the victims soon after their missing report was filed, we will take action against those policeman after investigation.”

She also asked Superintendent of Habiganj Police Joydev Kumar Bhodro to take necessary steps to ascertain whether there was any negligence on the part police.

Terming the killing of the four boys “heinous”, the minister said: “The killers will be brought to book soon after their arrest and they will get exemplary punishment.”

The junior minister also handed over cheques of Tk50,000 to family members of each victim.

Being informed by locals, police recovered the bodies of the schoolboys -  Monir Miah, 7, son of Abdal Miah; Jakaria Ahmed Shuvo, 8, son of Md Wahid Miah; Tajel Miah, 10, son of Abdul Aziz; and Ismail Hossain, 10, son of Abdul Kader – on Wednesday morning. The boys went missing on February 12.

A total of five people have so far been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder.

Of the arrestees, Abdul Ali, 50, and his son Jewel Mia, 22, were placed on 10-day remand each on Thursday while three others are still under the custody of Bahubal police.
