An alleged robber has been killed in a "gunfight" with Rapid Action Battalion members when a gang of robbers attempted to loot a bank in Savar's Dhamrai.
The shootout between robbers and RAB officials took place on the premises of Dhamrai Bazar branch of state-owned Sonali Bank early Friday.
The name of the dead was revealed as Masud while details of him could not be known immediately.
Besides, five people, namely Sabuj, 62, Shila, 18, Romana, 25, Riazuddin, 48 and a ten-year-old boy, were arrested with lethal weapons from the spot.
Confirming the death, RAB 4 Commander Masudur Rahman said Masud and the five rented the second floor of a four-storied building that housed Dhamrai Sonali Bank branch on the first floor.
The robbers had been living for about three months introducing themselves as garment workers to their neighbours.
“The robbers cut through the building roof to enter the bank. However, the RAB noticed the robbery and soon encircled the whole building. Sensing our presence, the robbers started firing at us to make a gateway to flee forcing us to retaliate leaving Masud dead on the spot,” said the RAB 4 commander.
