ATM frauds: EBL compensates

Eastern Bank Limited (EBL) has returned the money, which was stolen from their ATM booths through card forgery on last Friday, to the respective customers. 

The bank handed over cheques to the five victim clients at a function held at the central bank headquarters in the city yesterday. The rest 19 clients’ money was deposited to their respective accounts. 

Hasan O Rashid, additional managing director of Eastern Bank Limited (EBL), handed over the cheques to the five customers of the bank in presence of Subhankar Saha, executive director of Bangladesh Bank (BB) 

A gang of fraudsters withdrew money from some ATM booths through stealing card data by using card-skimming device on last Friday. 

ATM network services of EBL were suspended from 12noon to 6pm on that day. Two ATMs of EBL in Gulshan area were used by the fraudsters to copy cardholders’ data by using skimming devices.     

Following the incident of forgery, the central bank took some preventive measures and asked the respective banks to return the money back to the victim clients as banks can not avoid the responsibility of the unanticipated incident. 

A total of over Tk20 lakh was withdrawn from 36 clients of three banks account through card forgery.

Clients urged banks to become more careful about protecting client’s money while receiving cheque at the function. 

Bangladesh Bank asked the other banks to return money to the affected clients within next week.
