Islam hopes to send 1.5m workers to Malaysia in next three years

Update : 17 Feb 2016, 06:35 PM

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam yesterday told the parliament that the demand of manpower from Malaysia had not been at expected level.

For this reason, the manpower export to the country was not satisfactory under the government-to-government initiative, he said.

The minister, however, hoped that Bangladesh could send 1.5m workers to the Southeast Asian nation in next three years.

“In October last year, a consensus was reached on sending manpower through government-to-government iniative involving recruiting agencies.”

He said an MoU might be signed today to send  1.5m people to Malaysia in next three years.

On February 8, the draft of MoU was approved in the cabinet, Nurul Islam said.

Replying to another query, the minister said Bangladesh now exports manpower to 161 global destinations while the number was only 61 during the BNP-Jamaat regime.
