An allegation of baby switching brought against a city hospital has been withdrawn by the father who made the accusation.
The father, fruit trader Shamsul Islam Bulu, on Tuesday morning accused Ma O Shishu Shasthya Hospital, a private clinic in Dhaka's Mohammadpur neighbourhood, of switching his newborn son with a dead baby girl.
He has since retracted his accusation.
The confusion seems to have arisen after a local ultrasonogram clinic assured the parents that they would be having a baby boy. After speaking with the doctors, the couple are now convinced that the baby girl was theirs.
Dr Helen Zedeen, the attending obstretician, said: "Parveen Akhtar has been treated here for the last nine months. She last visited on February 9 but missed her next appointment. This morning, Parveen came in around 7:45am in critical condition and was admitted for an emergency delivery. But her water had broken and the infant died due to a lack of water inside the womb."
"This is a sad incident resulting from a misunderstanding," the hospital's director, Dr Muniruzzaman, said.
Mohammadpur OC Mohammad Jamal Uddin Mir had earlier sent a police team to investigate the allegation.
